While the weather is warming up on P.E.I., Ductless Split (commonly called Mini-Split) heat pumps are a great investment for both the cold and hotter months ahead. Running on electricity, these devices are a great addition to a home or cottage
How do they work?
The simplest way to describe how a ductless heat pump works is to compare it to your refrigerator. Your refrigerator removes heat from the inside and, using refrigerant gasses under compression, releases that heat into your home. As a test, go ahead and feel the back of your fridge. You will feel heated air rising from it.
By installing a reversing valve in this system, you can also provide cooling and it does exactly what it sounds like. The system reverses the flow of gasses so that you can cool your home.
Why should I invest in one?
A ductless heat pump system is an extremely efficient way to heat or cool your home. Using inverter technology means it only consumes the amount of power required for the load.
Working at peak efficiency, a ductless heat pump can provide three times as much heat energy as standard electric heating systems for the same cost.
Ductless heat pumps are also a great fit for cottages. They can cool it during those hot summer days and heat it during the shoulder seasons.
One final reason to own a heat pump: they also dehumidify! And during a Maritime summer, cutting down on that humidity can make a huge difference.
What are the downsides?
A heat pump can stop working if it’s extremely cold out, but it would have to be very, very cold outside for it to stop working. The efficiency rates of the system can also drop as it gets colder out. It means that instead of working at 300 per cent efficiency, on very cold mornings it may only run at 100 per cent efficiency.
